# Install and update the Octopoda CLI

> Install the octopoda command-line tool on macOS or Linux with one command, choose where it goes, pin a version, verify its signature, and keep it up to date.

The `octopoda` CLI is a single binary for macOS and Linux, on Intel or ARM. One command installs it, and `octopoda update` keeps it current. On Windows, use it inside [WSL](https://learn.microsoft.com/windows/wsl/install).

## Install

```bash theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://get.octopoda.dev | sh
```

The installer:

1. Downloads the release list and the `octopoda` binary for your system.
2. Checks the binary's SHA-256 checksum against the release list, and stops if it does not match.
3. If [minisign](https://jedisct1.github.io/minisign/) is installed, also checks the binary's signature.
4. Installs it to `/usr/local/bin` if that folder is writable, or to `~/.local/bin` otherwise.

If the folder is not on your `PATH`, the installer prints the line to add to your shell profile.

Check the installation:

```bash theme={null}
octopoda version
```

## Installer options

Set these environment variables for the `sh` that runs the installer:

| Variable | What it does |
| - | - |
| `OCTOPODA_INSTALL_DIR` | Installs to this folder instead. |
| `OCTOPODA_VERSION` | Installs this version instead of the latest. `octopoda version` prints the version you have. |

```bash theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://get.octopoda.dev | OCTOPODA_INSTALL_DIR="$HOME/bin" sh
```

## Update

```bash theme={null}
octopoda update
```

`octopoda update` downloads the latest version, checks its checksum and its signature, and replaces the binary in place. If it cannot write to the folder the CLI is in, run the installer again instead.

## Uninstall

Sign out, then delete the binary:

```bash theme={null}
octopoda logout
rm "$(command -v octopoda)"
```

`octopoda logout` signs the device out on Octopoda and deletes the saved sign-in. See [Configuration](https://docs.octopoda.dev/cli/configuration.md) for where it is stored.
